Catherine Rae-Dunnigan says:
"My interest in becoming an artist began as a little girl watching my grandfather sketching at our kitchen table and being in awe of the paintings he had done as a teenager in rural Illinois. I have sketched and drawn and painted ever since. For the last three years, after a forty-year business career, I have been able to devote my time to my passion for art.
My work is inspired by my global travels. I like to capture the essence of the place and time as I experienced it. Usually, I reference photo(s) taken by me or my husband. In some cases, I begin a piece en plein aire and finish in my home studios in Illinois and Minnesota.
I move between four media; equally comfortable working in acrylic, oil, color pencil, and graphite. My choice is based on my subject matter along with when and where I will be working. This versatility allows for a range of creative interpretation that appeals to a broad audience. As a painter, I work with a limited palette and mix my own colors. Ten tubes of paint allow me to create a range of color that draws the viewer into the scene. With recent work I have been incorporating more palette knife techniques. As a color pencil artist, I layer colors to create depth and a level of detail that brings my subjects to life.
My work has earned merit and special merit awards in both painting and color pencil."
